About Gremlin's

Gremlin's  is renowned South Africa over for their Graphite Custom Built Rod's, Fresh Bait and Tackle, Also key cutting, gas refilling and Deep Sea Charter Bookings.

Here is some history of Gremlin's, Gremlin's was started by the late Viv Lewis of Margate in the early 1940's, after he left the air force. The name Gremlin's comes from the air force where if anything went wrong the name Gremlin was used. As you see by the photo's below Gremlin's was started in a wooden cabin, in Mushroom Lane in the garden of Viv and his wife Jean. The shop then moved to a brick building in the same yard. It is known by many of the senior members of Margate.

Gremlin's was the first shop to have neon signage in Margate. This building still stands today and Viv's son dale still occupies the premises.

In 1948 the shop was moved to the now centre of Margate, at about this time Viv got the company Defy to build him a chest deep freeze, and this was the first freezer south of Durban, and the only tackle shop to sell frozen bait in the country.

In 1964 Gremlin's was sold to the late Rodney Gavin and Jim Attenbourgh, who had both moved from Zambia( Northern Rhodesia), to settle in Margate. This was the breakthrough , to the start of Custom Built Rod's, being the likes of Sealy, Sylow Flex and Hardy.

In 1977 Jim passed away and Rodney Gavin's son Rob Gavin joined Gremlin's, after completing his trade as a tool and die maker he is still the sole owner of Gremlin's.

With his love and passion for fishing started the House of RG. Range of rod's, with the use of his skills from his trade, the rod's have come along way. the rod's today are renowned in south africa, and have sold as far as California, and Austria. Brendan Kolher joined Gremlin's in 2006, and the combined knowledge of the two, make Gremlin's the top rod building tackle shop in South Africa.
